Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a minimum USMLE score?

All candidates with a passing USMLE I and/or COMLEX I score are candidates for interview. We have no minimum USMLE I or COMLEX I score, but those with strong scores have a greater likelihood of being invited for an interview.

Q: When are USMLE and/or COMLEX II CK and CS scores due?

USMLE II CK and CS scores or COMLEX II scores are due at time of interview. If unavailable, proof of registration may be substituted as a place marker until scores are available to submit. Passing USMLE II CK and CS scores must be submitted to the GME office by February 10th, 2019 in order to qualify for rank on the NRMP Rank Order List.

Q: Are USMLE scores required for osteopathic applicants?

No, but they are preferred. Osteopathic applicants need only provide a COMLEX transcript. If both transcripts are provided, the stronger score will be used in the review process.

Q: Is it possible for couples to interview on the same day?

We are a family-friendly institution. As such, we will do our best to ensure that significant others are interviewed on the same day. E-Mail rxm1299@med.miami.edu so we may note this request.

Q: What is the agenda for a typical interview day?

Our day begins at 8:00am with breakfast with our residents. Our Program Director will meet the group and provide an overview of the residency program followed by interviews and a tour of Holy Cross Hospital. Lunch with our residents during noon lecture and the day concludes with a brief wrap up with the program administration. You should be finished by 2:00pm.

Q: I need to reschedule! How do I do that?

No problem! If it is 15 days or more prior to interview, simply go to the ERAS Interview Scheduler to change your interview date. If you are within 14 days of your interview date, please e-mail rxm1299@med.miami.edu with your currently scheduled date and two date options that work best for you. We’ll confirm a date within 24-hours of receiving your request.

Q: Are there special requirements for candidates who graduated more than two years ago?

Candidates with a graduation date of, or prior to, December 2014 must provide evidence of active involvement in a clinical practice between medical school graduation and application date. Acceptable documentation may include service as a medical officer in the military, National Health Service Corps, Indian Health Service experience, or completion of a similar government or public health related service obligation. Completion of a clinically relevant advanced degree, involvement in postdoctoral research, or other clinically relevant research activities immediately following graduation from medical school may be accepted in lieu of clinical experience at the discretion of the Program Administrator and the Program Director.

Q: Does experience as an observer or volunteer in the U.S. health system count as active involvement in a clinical practice?*

While both of these roles provides valuable learning experiences to the participant, these opportunities do not provide hands-on patient care. As such, we will evaluate such experiences on a case by case basis.

Q: Do you support any visas?

Yes, we accept only J-1 visas.

Q: Do you have a sample contract I can look at?

Yes, it can be viewed at sample contract. A printed version is provided at the interview.

Q: Is there an evening before get-together with your residents?

Our residents will meet you for a casual get together the evening before your interview. Details and directions will be provided when confirming your interview date.

Q: I’ve signed up for an interview! How do I arrange my hotel?

We have many community partners that provide great accommodations at even greater rates when you mention Holy Cross Hospital. Our favorites are listed below. One thing to mention—the cost of hotels increases in mid-December due to the tourism season.
