Recent Events

Faculty, Residents, and Associates at UM@HCH enjoy a robust experience with activities provided throughout the year. Each class is welcomed to the community with a program director’s cook-out the Sunday prior to Orientation, and a community ambassador welcome breakfast on the first day of orientation. Upcoming events for the current academic year include an All Residents Retreat in October, a New Years Party in January, a Match Day Celebration in March, and an End of the Year Celebration in June.

July 9, 2015 – Simulation Day at the Gordon Center of Research

Simulation Day at the Gordon Center As part of the Orientation process, the Classes of 2017 and 2018 took to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Gordon Center for Research on July 9, 2015 to brush up on clinical skills. This novel approach to hands-on clinical orientation allowed residents to become acclimated to the “U” way of providing sign-out, consulting with physicians, and assessed basic skills from ECG reading to Code Team leadership.

Led by Program Director, Dr. Lisa C. Martinez, residents also participated in hands-on procedure training with University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Emergency Medicine faculty, Dr. R. Peter Thompson and recent Jackson Memorial Hospital residency graduate and current UM@HCH Chief Resident, Dr. Ernesto J. Fonts,.

All of University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital Program Leadership attended the event to provide feedback and tips for excelling in residency.

July 1, 2015 – White Coat Ceremony & Community Ambassador

White Coat Ceremony Holy Cross Hospital and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine welcomed the non-profit hospital’s first class of medical residents with a traditional white coat ceremony Wednesday. The time-honored tradition symbolized the new doctors’ transition from medical school into clinical care and the practice of medicine.

June 28, 2015 – Program Directors’ Welcome BBQ

Program Directors' Welcome BBQOne of the best parts of starting a new program is deciding what our traditions will be. The Program Directors’ Welcome BBQ is definitely a tradition for many years to come.

Set for the Sunday prior to orientation, the PD BBQ was an informal way for faculty, residents, friends, & family to meet for the first time. Over 70 guests joined us at Snyder Park centrally located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for delicious food by local favorite, Shorty’s BBQ, and local brews from Funky Buddha.

Attendees brought their favorite lawn games including a kiddie bounce house, volleyball, and kickball to ensure a rip-roaring good time was had by all!

March 14, 2015 – Holy Cross Auxiliary Epicurean Escapade

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Community gathered Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the “Epicurean Escapade: A Food & Wine Experience” to benefit the Dorothy Manguiran Comprehensive Women’s Center at Holy Cross Healthplex.

The Epicurean Escapade featured themed presentations of gourmet food and fine wine from around the world. Attendees from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program included Kenneth Homer, MD; Lisa Martinez, MD; Ravi George, DO; Vincente Font, MD; Alan Niederman, MD; Gabriel Valle, MD; Edward Coopersmith, MD; Josh Larned, MD; Jorge Ajuria, MD and Faride Ramos, MD.

Proceeds from the Epicurean Escapade event benefit the new 55,000 square foot Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center at Holy Cross HealthPleax, a one-stop, state-of-the-art facility. The $15 million Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center was built entirely through philanthropy, including $1 million from 200 women in the community who each pledged $5,000 as lifetime, founding members of the Girlfriend’s Club in support of the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center.

January 15, 2015 – Celebratory Cocktail Reception

Dean Goldschmidt & Dr. Patrick Taylor CMO at HC reception Members of the Holy Cross Hospital and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine gathered to celebrate the official start of a great partnership.

The cocktail reception honored the many leaders working tirelessly to create the dynamic and innovative offerings of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at University of Miami at Holy Cross Hospital.

Special guests of the night included Pascal Goldschmidt, MD, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; Patrick Taylor, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Holy Cross Hospital; Joan E. St. Onge, MD, Associate Dean of Regional Medical Education at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; Kenneth Homer, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Holy Cross Hospital; Michael Weiss, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Many members of the Light of the World Clinic Board of Directors, Broward County Family and Health Services Senior Management and Board of Directors, Holy Cross Hospital Medical Staff and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine faculty were also present to celebrate this accomplishment.
