General Surgery

Program Goals and Objectives

The overall goal of our surgical residency program is to prepare the resident to function as an independent qualified practitioner of surgery at the advanced level of performance expected of a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Our program will utilize all modalities available to train our residents in the classroom, the operating room, outpatient offices, hospital floors, and simulation suites including wet labs twice a year. The education of our residents will encompass didactic instruction in the basic and clinical sciences of surgical diseases, as well as education in procedural skills and operative techniques. The educational process must lead to the appropriate acquisition of knowledge and technical skills, allowing the resident to practice surgery. The resident must gain the ability to integrate the acquired knowledge into the clinical situation, and over time will develop sound surgical judgment.

Residents reviewing scansThe educational process will occur in an environment that encourages professionalism and excellence in communications. The residents will learn to rapidly adapt to changes in the practice environment. The resident will also demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care. These goals will be achieved using both formal education methods and mentoring. Our program will strive toward having residents who excel in the six core competencies of the ACGME. Graduating residents will be expected to be well prepared for practice or for entry into excellent subspecialty fellowships.

All of our faculties are clinicians committed to excellence in patient care and teaching. Every subspecialty is represented and residents will have ample opportunity for one on one interaction. We are truly proud of the program that we call the University of Miami /JFK Medical Center Palm Beach Regional GME Consortium General Surgery Residency and we look forward to our future with enthusiasm and excitement.
